The Power of Habit: Charles Duhigg explains how marketers can use customer habits for smarter marketing

Charles Duhigg, Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author and New York Times Best-selling Author, The Power of Habit

“Right now, we’re living in this golden age of understanding the neurology of habit formation,” said Charles Duhigg, Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author and New York Times Best-selling Author, The Power of Habit.

In this abridged session from MarketingSherpa Summit 2016, Duhigg draws on his experience as a war correspondent, discussing how he became interested in habit by speaking with an Army major who used habit as a powerful tool in reducing riots in Iraq.

“When you’re in the military, it’s like a giant habit change machine … [the Army major] said that the military taught him how to see habits around him. And once people explain how habits work, it’s like you hand them a pair of glasses where all of a sudden everything looks different,” he said.

Duhigg, upon returning from that assignment, began exploring the science of habit formation, illustrating why we do what we do and how we can change it.

To further explore why the most powerful habits have emotional cores and how tweaking even one habit can have staggering effects, read our two-part interview with Duhigg and view our Media Center interview with him from the Summit floor.
